Gilmer Chamber searching for new leadership

\The Gilmer Chamber is searching for its next president and chief executive officer. The president is responsible for all aspects of operations of the chamber and reports directly to the chamber’s board of directors, which is headed by an annually elected chairperson.

Local election board being formed

Beginning in January, Gilmer County will have an election board. A local bill passed the Georgia Legislature in April and was signed by Gov. Brian Kemp in May to create the board and move the supervision of elections away from the probate judge.

Gilmer elections staff receives EAGLE Award

The Gilmer County Registrars Office and Elections Department received an award from Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger recognizing county election offices that go above and beyond in serving Georgia voters.

County reaches agreement for building

Gilmer County is in the process of signing contracts to buy a building complex for $4.25 million. The complex is located at 822 Industrial Boulevard in Ellijay and currently houses some offices for Piedmont Hospital.  It is owned by GMR Ellijay LLC.

Lower speed limits on North Main Street proposed

Speed limits on North Main Street will be lowered if an ordinance is approved by the Ellijay City Council. The council had a first reading of the ordinance when meeting last Monday.

Propane truck fire caught in time

A propane truck fire on South Main Street Monday night caused the street to be closed and evacuations to be made within the immediate area around the fire.  The Ellijay Fire Department responded just after 8:30 p.m.

Fire station to be named for Maddox

A Gilmer County fire station has been dedicated to a fallen first responder. The Tails Creek fire station on Highway 282 was dedicated to Eric Maddox, who passed away suddenly last year not long after a shift. Station 14 was where Maddox was assigned.
