Gilmer County sheriff investigators are awaiting autopsy reports to determine the cause of death for a man found dead in early December.
The body of a 68-year-old male was found Dec. 1, half in a creek close to the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge at River Park in Ellijay on the soccer field side. The creek is a feeder stream for the Coosawattee River.
“It looks like it was an accident,” said Captain Frank Copeland of the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Department. “It just appears that way right now.”
Copeland said the case is in a holding pattern while awaiting the autopsy, though investigators are still gathering evidence.
The man was a former resident of Ellijay and was living with relatives in an adjoining county.
Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the individual while the case is open.
