High schoolers and community leaders lined up outside Clear Creek Middle School to high-five and cheer on students as they hopped off the bus. Gilmer High students and Chamber members give an upbeat welcome and high fives to students getting off the bus on Valentine’s Day.

County tables decision on HB 581

Gilmer County commissioners tabled a move to opt out of HB 581. Commissioners made the decision at their regular meeting Feb. 13, after hearing there is a move in the Georgia Legislature to extend the opt out deadline until March 31, 2029. HB 92 would extend the deadline.

Two boards opt out of HB 581

It’s official, the Gilmer County School System and the city of Ellijay have decided to opt out of HB 581. HB 581, also known as the Save Our Homes Act, establishes a statewide, “floating” homestead exemption that allows the assessment on properties to only rise annually at the rate of inflation.

A popular, local restaurant is getting a national spotlight. The Roof in downtown Ellijay was chosen to be featured on “America’s Best Restaurants” (ABR). ABR is an online show that airs episodes every weekday on Youtube, to an audience of more than 10,000 subscribers.

Local elementary students are spreading the message that “it’s cool to be kind” and raising money for animals in need with a pet portrait fundraiser.  A display in the hall at Mountain View Elementary showcases some of the Kindness Club’s pet portraits for teachers.

An East Ellijay police officer resigned prior to the conclusion of an investigation into him being shot while off duty. East Ellijay Public Safety Director Larry Callahan made the announcement Monday morning, Feb. 10. The resignation was effective immediately. Sgt.
