Extreme weekend weather leaves minimal impact to Gilmer County

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes ripped through the South over the weekend, but the storms weakened as they moved through Georgia, with no injuries and minimal damage reported in Gilmer.
The storms left dozens dead before reaching the state, according to National Public Radio.

When John Logan Nelson tried to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II, he failed the physical. However, Nelson didn’t give up and was finally accepted into military service, according to a family member.
