Ellijay City Council members voted for the city attorney to prepare a resolution to annex a right-of-way portion of State Route 282.
At the council meeting on Monday, March 17, Ellijay Police Chief Edward Lacey was asked by Mayor Al Hoyle what distance he recommended to be annexed from the Oaks Subdivision.
Lacey said at least 300 feet, up to 600 feet, past the Oaks would be best to solve some traffic complaints they receive regarding the intersection with Calvin Jackson Drive. He added that 600 feet would put the intersection of the Oaks Drive within radar length for speed detection.
Council members changed the motion to annex 600 feet west of the Oaks, and the motion carried. Once the resolution is drafted, it will need to be sent to the state legislature to acquire a charter change, adding the right of way to the city for next year.
