A Gilmer County deputy was placed on leave after being arrested in Pickens County while off-duty.
Sgt. Jason Lynn Newman, 34, of Talking Rock, is being held on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, interferring with a 911 call, obstructing police and reckless conduct.
“Sgt. Newman has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation,” said Gilmer County Sheriff Stacy Nicholson.
Based on the outcome of the investigation, Nicholson said a determination will be made about Newman’s employment.
According to a press release from the Pickens Sheriff’s Office, at 10:16 p.m. Jan. 31, deputies responded to a domestic violence call involving the Gilmer County deputy.
Newman was arrested after being located by the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office at 1 a.m., the release said.
Because the investigation is ongoing, no further details were provided.
