First reading of crypto and land use ordinances passes

A crypto mining ordinance for Gilmer County and an amended land use ordinance have both cleared first readings unanimously. Both ordinances passed their first votes following public hearings before the regular session Nov. 9. Two people spoke during the crypto mining public hearing.

Gilmer Toys for Tots campaign underway

The Toys for Tots (TFT) campaign that covers Gilmer County could help 2,000 or more local children with presents this Christmas.  Ret. Marine Sgt. A.J. LeCompte, TFT campaign coordinator, said 1,742 Gilmer children received toys in 2022, and that number typically grows by the year.

Widespread brush fires lead to burn ban

Brush fires have been persistent foes for Gilmer and Georgia Forestry firefighters over the past week — so much so that an emergency burn ban has been issued.

Couple honors local World War II vets buried in Belgium

When Amber Davis began researching the lives of several Gilmer County soldiers who died in World War II, things got a little “unsettled.” “When the men first started appearing in my dreams, they came one at a time,” she said of the service members. “They were always silent.

Board finalizes changes to proposed ordinances

At a special called meeting, commissioners put the finishing touches on ordinances being proposed for a vote this week. Gilmer County is currently under a moratorium for crypto and data mining. Commissioners agreed to the final details of a proposed crypto ordinance at the special meeting Nov. 2.

New community merchants group started

A new local merchants association has formed, and it will continue to present two of Ellijay’s yearly parades, while also planning other local events. Engage! (or Engage in Gilmer) comes on the heels of the Downtown Ellijay Business and Community Association (DEBCA).

Water authority board hears project updates

By Michael Andrews Mountain Life Editor   Ellijay Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority (EGCWSA) board members heard updates on three ongoing water line projects when meeting last Monday.

An arm of the Gilmer Community Food Pantry that gives pet food to dog and cat owners who receive their own food from the pantry could use a helping hand.
