After completing desert training for deployment in the North African theater, Burley Davis was unexpectedly sent to Great Britain with his U.S. Army unit. There, he and his fellow soldiers found themselves below some sky-high action when air-raid sirens sounded.

Gilmer County commissioners put the finishing touches on the 2024 budget just in time for a public hearing this week. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Gilmer County courthouse. Beginning with a budget meeting Nov.

A senior with a strong interest in Earth sciences is Gilmer High School’s 2023 STAR Student. STAR Student Allyson Muller earned the recognition for her academic achievement and performance on the SAT. She is the daughter of Paul Muller, of Ellijay.

Man killed in accident

An Ellijay man was killed and his wife injured in a vehicle accident. James Dietz, 79, was killed Monday, Dec. 4, when his 2019 Honda CR-V entered Hwy. 282 from The Oaks Drive and was struck by a 2019 Cheverolet Silverado traveling west on Hwy.

A much-crossed Highway 515 bridge is getting an extensive makeover, which could take more than a year to complete.  The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) project at the Cecil Mathews Memorial Bridge (also known as Turniptown Creek Bridge) began in October.
