The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) will team up for a special event that’s open to the public, but is especially of note to parents of school-age children.
The Safer Internet Day workshop will take place Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 6-8 p.m., at Ellijay Elementary School.
That date is recognized internationally as Safer Internet Day, a program first started in Europe to raise awareness of safer and better internet practices that’s since taken root in other countries.
ConnectSafely, a Silicon Valley nonprofit dedicated to educating people about online safety, privacy and security, sponsors many Safer Internet Day programs in the U.S. each year with a grant program.
At the local event, representatives from the GBI and GCSO will partner to give presentations on topics including the dangers of social media, child exploitation and safer internet practices. Presentations specifically for younger age groups will also be given.
The sheriff’s office said the first time event is for everybody and is free to attend.
