Assessor board continues over-65 exemption talk

While meeting last Thursday, members of the Gilmer County Board of Assessors discussed the possibility of again changing the way unattached structures are assessed for property owners who receive an over-65 homestead exemption.

Sheriff Stacy Nicholson announces he will seek re-election this year

Sheriff Stacy Nicholson and his wife, Stacie, live in the city of Ellijay. They are both members and regularly attend Friendship #3 Baptist Church in McCaysville. The sheriff is 48 years old and will begin his 30th year of law enforcement with Gilmer Sheriff’s office in March of 2020.

Doug Pritchett announces run for Board of Education

Doug Pritchett has announced his bid for the Board of Education Post 3 seat. Pritchett has served on the Board of Education since January 2019. In his announcement, Pritchett stated he would continue to be an advocate for all of our students in the Gilmer County School System.

Members of the Garden Club of Ellijay honored one of the club’s founding members at a special Arbor Day tree planting and dedication last Wednesday.  An ornamental crabapple tree was planted on the lawn of the Gilmer County Library in remembrance of Annetta Bunch.

It hasn’t been long since Ginger Jennings was ridiculed in school. The reason? What she was wearing. “I couldn’t be like other kids, who have pictures of when they were younger,” she said. “My family was really poor and we didn’t ever have a lot of stuff. We moved around Ellijay a lot.

Four arrested in Fannin raids

Fannin County Sheriff’s Office investigators have made four arrests and seized a large amount of assorted drugs with a street value of $120,000. The arrests and seizures resulted from search warrants executed two weeks ago at two separate residences.

New lieutenants recognized at Gilmer Fire and Rescue

Gilmer County Fire and Rescue recently promoted five employees to the rank of lieutenant. During a Feb. 17 ceremony at the local fire and rescue headquarters, firefighters Marshall Rhodes, C.J. Morris and Chris Bird received their lieutenant helmets and brass.
