Explosion at Roo Mountain Vineyards

A gas explosion at Roo Mountain Vineyards left two people injured and property damaged. “This is too early to know exactly what happened,” Gilmer County Public Safety Director Sam West said. Right now, the incident is under investigation by the Georgia Fire Marshal Office.

Railroad crossing on State Route 52 closed starting Sept. 2

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will close two railroad crossings this week on State Route 52/South Main Street and State Route 282/Industrial Boulevard. “Watch for crews driving slowly in these areas,” GDOT Communications Officer Joe Schulman said.

Traffic stop turns into meth bust

When Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled over a gray Chevrolet Colorado, they didn’t expect to make a major meth bust that would expose an interstate drug operation. But their efforts resulted in the seizure of 9 ounces of methamphetamine, according to a GCSO press release.

Gilmer armadillos are part of great northern expansion

Armadillos are creatures of contradictions.  They are armored yet shy, small but widespread, and weak but difficult to eradicate. Now that these animals live in Gilmer County, it’s likely that they’re here to stay, armadillo expert Dr. William Loughry said.

911 call numbers rise

As the number of residents and visitors increases, so does the need for law enforcement, EMS and fire services in Gilmer County. Gilmer County emergency services get more calls every year, Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) Captain Frank Copeland said. “It’s kind of what you’d expect,” he said.

One man shot, one man arrested

A Talking Rock man was arrested and another man was taken to the hospital following a shooting. Deputies responded to a person being shot at the intersection of Parksbrook Road and Parksbrook Lane Aug. 17, at 9:42 a.m., according to an incident report.

New building planned for South Main Street

With powerful yet delicate movements, an excavator machine set to work demolishing the empty building at 84 South Main Street. The building, long empty, will be replaced with a real estate office, said James Dover, owner of Dover Brothers Contracting. “It’s gonna be an office building,” he said.
