Visitors can enjoy an exciting event
What could be better than combining the joy of Christmas trees with the joy of reading?
That’s exactly what’s on offer at the Gilmer County Library’s Festival of Trees.
Various local groups and businesses are decorating trees for the library this year, Gilmer Friends of the Library President Barbara Dunson said.
“It’s a really good time to go visit the library and see all the pretty trees,” she said.
The free event goes from Nov. 20 to Jan. 1 at the Gilmer County Library, located at 268 Calvin Jackson Drive, Ellijay. People can visit during the library’s normal visiting hours, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
People don’t need a library card to attend.
“I think the really fun thing about Festival of Trees is getting to see a lot of your local organizations and small businesses be represented at the library in a really fun way,” Marketing Manager Sarah Childers said.
Events like the Festival of Trees and the library’s upcoming Holiday Open House on Dec. 1 also help kids overcome the “winter slump,” she said.
Every year, kids tend to lose progress in reading when they are out of school in summer and over Christmas break, Childers said.
If events can bring kids to the library, they are more likely to check out books so they can improve their skills.
The Festival of Trees also kicks off the library’s Winter Literacy Challenge, which calls readers of all ages to complete fun winter reading activities. Those who complete parts of the challenge can receive prizes, she said.
“There are great events at the Gilmer Library for all ages,” Childers said.
