GHSA approves member schools return to training

Georgia’s high school athletes will be permitted to train on school grounds beginning June 8. The Georgia High School Association’s Board of Trustees made the decision at a meeting last Thursday, May 21. Activities are voluntary and limited to conditioning and weight training.

Assessment notices mailed, appeal period ends July 6

The Gilmer County Board of Assessors approved this year’s property assessment notices when meeting Thursday, May 21.  The 33,321 real property, 1,733 personal property and nine FLPA (Forest Land Protection Act) notices were mailed last Friday. The 45-day appeal period lasts from May 22 - July 6.

Census target dates extended

The 2020 Census will proceed, though not exactly as planned, with new target dates and precautions in place. A statement from the U.S. Census Bureau noted that a phased restart of some 2020 Census field operations began in select areas the week of May 4.

Early voting begins, mail-in continues

Early voting for the June 9 primary started Monday, but it looks a bit different. Gilmer County Chief Registrar Tammy Watkins is asking people to practice patience. “It’s rocking and rolling,” she said. “We are doing pretty well with it.

Ellijay council OKs exploration of alternate truck routes

The Ellijay City Council approved a resolution for exploration of alternate truck routes to alleviate traffic congestion downtown as the council met, for the first time since March, Monday, May 18.

No Taste of Ellijay event, but chamber showcasing local restaurants this week

Inclement weather has caused Taste of Ellijay, the popular food-sampling event presented by the Gilmer Chamber, to be rescheduled a time or two.
