Water board OKs more cyberinsurance

Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority board members approved increasing their cyberattack insurance coverage, while also being updated on current and upcoming projects, during a brief meeting Monday, June 28.

Book sculptures, ‘Vanishing Georgia’ pieces on display in gallery exhibits

A monthlong exhibit at the Gilmer Arts Gallery features work by a local artist who literally digs deep into books to craft his eye-catching sculptures. Ted Wray’s exhibit, “Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover,” will be on display for public viewing at the 207 Dalton Street gallery through Aug. 3.

Ridley tabbed to be superintendent

Dr. Hal Brian Ridley is the lone finalist for the position of superintendent of Gilmer County Schools. The news arrived Monday in a press release from the school system. The Gilmer County Board of Education voted unanimously to name Ridley as the sole finalist at a called meeting June 26.

More affordable housing goal of new action group

Members of a newly created action group are hoping to find ways to improve the lack of affordable housing in Gilmer County.

Vernon Holt always wanted to get into the old tool chest that had been sitting in the barn on his grandfather’s farm. His uncle, Raymond Holt, had given him the chest in the early 1990s, not long after Vernon, 94, and his wife, Billie, moved onto the estate originally owned by Jasper Loprenzo Holt.

Teen seriously injured in dog attack

A June 22 dog attack on New Hope Club Road resulted in a teenager receiving severe injuries. According to a Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office incident report, the sheriff’s office responded to a dog bite call at the Piedmont ER.

Family Connection awards minigrants to five local nonprofits

Gilmer County Family Connection was recently able to split $5,000 worth of grant funding among five local nonprofits.

Gilmer Fire and Rescue is continuing a popular free fan program this summer. The program, in which box fans are made available for those who need them, has long been a cooperative project between the local fire and rescue department and Faith, Hope and Charity Recycle Store Inc.
