Honoring their fellow firefighters

Early Saturday morning, Gilmer Fire and Rescue personnel honored the lives of the 343 firefighters who helped evacuate thousands of people from the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001, by climbing the equivalent of 110 floors at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium.

Fire Chief Daniel Kauffman said 110 represents the number of floors of the fallen towers.

This was the department’s first 9/11 memorial stair climb, but it will likely be done again next year, Kauffman said.
