Ellijay’s Hope Lutheran Church will continue to serve as a drop-off location for an international shoe drive benefiting orphaned and vulnerable children. Donations can be left at the church, located at 3295 Old Highway 5 South, during August.

Dr. Hal Brian Ridley has been hired to be Gilmer County Schools’ next superintendent. Shortly after the start of Monday’s board of education work session, members retreated to executive session to briefly discuss the matter.

Gilmer Schools announce open house dates

The Gilmer County School System has set open house dates ahead of the new school year. Ninth-grade orientation will be held at Gilmer High Saturday, July 31, at 10 a.m. Remaining GHS students may come by the school Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Pre-K open house is set for Monday, Aug.

Ellijay council OKs ballot item for liquor package sales

Ellijay residents will be able to vote on whether or not to allow package sales of distilled spirits within the city limits. The Ellijay City Council approved a resolution to initiate a voter referendum on that topic during a Monday, July 19, meeting.
