Gilmer High takes 1st at band competition

Gilmer High School Band attended the 15th annual Armuchee Invitational Marching Festival and Competition Oct. 8. In Class 3A, GHS finished first in band, color guard and percussion and was second in drum majors at the event.

Helping keep dogs, cats fed and at home goal of pet food pantry

The Gilmer Community Food Pantry has long helped local residents and families in need of food. For the past couple of years, it’s also been helping some of the county’s pet owners by providing food for their dogs and cats.

Storm water, erosion control focus of River Park project

A new storm water infiltration system at River Park will reduce erosion by redirecting storm water runoff in a section of the park near South Main Street.

Early voting underway

The voter registrar’s office will also be open for two Saturdays, Oct. 22 & 29, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The last day of early voting is Friday, Nov. 4.

DDA talks possible downtown cleanup areas

The Ellijay Downtown Development Authority (DDA) heard a presentation from one of its members about possible cleanup areas in downtown Ellijay, as well as the need for more walkability downtown, as the DDA met last Tuesday.

Appalachian Road Show to perform at First Baptist Fall Festival

A Halloween homecoming is in store for an Ellijay musician who’s been traveling the country with bluegrass group Appalachian Road Show. The group, which includes Ellijay banjo player and singer Barry Abernathy, will perform at the Ellijay First Baptist Church Fall Festival Monday, Oct. 31.

Early voting starts Oct. 17

Early voting for Georgia’s upcoming general election will begin Monday, Oct. 17. Gilmer County voters will head to the voter registrar’s office at 1 Broad Street, Suite 107, to cast their votes. Early voting times are: Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and two Saturdays, Oct.

Strong start for Apple Festival

The 51st annual Georgia Apple Festival enjoyed a strong first weekend at the Lions Club Fairgrounds. According to the Gilmer Chamber, a total of 30,000 attended Saturday and Sunday. The festival continues this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16, at the fairgrounds.
