Retro Mountain Dew mural new on River Street

A new mural going up on the side of a historic River Street building is a throwback to a vintage Mountain Dew advertising campaign. The mural was commissioned by the local Pepsi plant, confirmed Dwight Childers, the plant’s general manager.

East Ellijay council OKs height variance for hotel

East Ellijay City Council members approved a height variance for a Marriott hotel currently under construction near Highway 515 when meeting Tuesday, Sept. 27.

New location, same old-time flavor for Dancing Goats Folkfest

A folk art festival that’s become popular amongst creators and fans of folk art will go on in a new location later this month. The annual Dancing Goats Folkfest will be held at River Park, on South Main Street, Saturday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 23. Event times are 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

The southbound lanes of Hwy. 515 were blocked Sept. 23 as law enforcement officials worked an accident caused by three people fleeing East Ellijay officers. One person died and two others were seriously injured in the crash. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident and charges are pending.

One person is dead and two others injured following a crash while fleeing police for a suspected shoplifting. East Ellijay Police Chief Larry Callahan said his department received a call from Walmart about a possible shoplifting incident Sept. 23.

County’s voting machines tested

As the start of early voting for the Nov. 8 general election draws near, Gilmer County’s voting machines were put to the test last week. More specifically, they underwent logic and accuracy testing to ensure the machinery operates correctly come voting time.
Produced as part of a Leadership Gilmer class project, an upcoming line of “Super Squad” trading cards features local police officers from all three county and city departments. Ellijay man killed in motorcycle accident

An Ellijay man was killed when his motorcycle struck another vehicle on Hwy. 52 West. Wesly James Epperson, 38, died at the scene. According to an accident report from the Georgia State Patrol, Epperson was behind a 2011 Toyota Camry on Hwy.
