State-level changes could strike funding for local kid’s food program

Pending changes to a state nutrition assistance program could result in loss of funding for a local program, as well as several similar ones in Georgia that provide food to local schoolchildren.

Drive-thru flu shot clinic set for Oct. 4

With flu season right around the corner, local residents will again have the opportunity to quickly and conveniently arm themselves by rolling up their sleeves at an upcoming drive-thru clinic held by the Gilmer County Health Department. The drive-thru flu shot clinic will take place 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Plans are underway to make the building at 127 Dalton Street, which neighbors the George Link Jr. Gilmer Arts Playhouse, the new location of  the Gilmer Arts Gallery. A United Latin American Pentecostal Church currently in the building is looking for a new place to which it can relocate.

21st Anniversary of 9/11

On this day 21 years ago, America suffered a vicious terrorist attack resulting in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives.  We will never forget.

County searching for missing man

Gilmer County deputies and the family of Christopher Mays are asking for help in locating the missing man. “We’re trying to get his picture out there as much as possible,” said Betty McArthur, his aunt. “His wife and daughter really need to find him.

Underground power line project headed toward possible December completion

A Georgia Power line relocation project that’s covered a wide swath of Gilmer County is expected to wrap by mid-December. It’s also been decided that the work, which has caused traffic delays in some areas, will be on hold for the upcoming Georgia Apple Festival.

Water board OKs lower fees for new customers in Roundtop project area

The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority will offer reduced tap and impact fees to residents in the Roundtop and Mt. Pisgah Road areas while a water main is being extended in that part of the county. Water board members adopted the temporary fees when meeting Monday, Aug. 29.

Hotel height issues heard by East Ellijay council

A Marriott hotel in the early construction phases in East Ellijay is, at its current design, too tall to meet the city’s building height requirements. The East Ellijay City Council and Mayor Mack West discussed that issue and heard input from the city’s engineer at a council meeting last Tuesday.
