A fifth name was added to the ballot for the Georgia House District 7 seat. Gilmer County GOP Chair Richie Stone qualified for the seat left open by the death of Speaker David Ralston. Stone joins Ralston’s widow Sheree Ralston, Brian K.

Daffodil Project garden dedicated at emotional ceremony

A World War II veteran, who was one of the liberators of the Dachau concentration camp near Munich, Germany, was humble about that history-making effort when speaking to a crowd gathered Wednesday, Dec. 7, for the dedication of a special daffodil garden at River Park.

Board to abandon portion of road, raise building fees

Once the details get hammered out, the center of Log Round Mountain Road will be abandoned by Gilmer County. A unanimous vote to begin the abandonment process followed a public hearing about the road, followed by a regular meeting on Dec. 8. A work session was held Dec. 7.

Four candidates qualified for the Georgia House seat left open by the death of Speaker David Ralston. Qualifying began Monday morning, Dec. 5, for a special election to fill the seat. The period ends Dec. 7, at 1 p.m., after publication of the Times-Courier.

‘A local landmark’

The herd of wooden pigs that helped made Poole’s Bar-B-Q famous remains on the hill, but the last plate of pork has been served at the popular East Ellijay restaurant. At least for now.

Warming center to open when below 30 degrees outside

A community warming center will open for public use when temperatures drop below 30 degrees this winter. Volunteers will open the warming center located at the left side entrance of the Gilmer County Civic Center, 1561 South Main Street, at 5 p.m.
