Board of Health hears flu, COVID case updates

Both COVID and flu case rates were down or starting to decline in Gilmer County prior to the Chirstmas holidays, members of the Gilmer County Board of Health heard during a Dec. 13 teleconference meeting. Dr.

Arlo latest addition to GCSO K-9 team

Arlo, a black German shepherd, is the latest addition to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) K-9 team. Arlo was only 5 weeks old when local homebuilder Trinity Custom Homes donated him to the sheriff’s office.

Ellijay council OKs alcohol license, contract renewals

The Ellijay City Council finished off the year with some typical year-end business, including renewing several alcohol licenses and a few city contracts, when meeting Monday, Dec. 19. Approved alcohol licenses included a microbrewery license renewal for Cartecay River Brewing Co.

Downtown scavenger hunt pitched at DDA meeting

Members of the Ellijay Downtown Development Authority (DDA) heard from a retired educator concerning her idea about a new community scavenger hunt for kids when meeting Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Local residents will be able to put their withered Christmas trees to good use with Keep Gilmer Beautiful’s second annual Christmas Tree recycling program. The community beautification group will hold a drive-thru Christmas tree dropoff event Saturday, Jan.

Water authority to deobligate last part of Roundtop project grant

The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority (EGCWSA) will not be eligible to receive the last draw of funding from a state Community Development Block Grant, which funded installation of new water line in the Roundtop Road area. As water authority board members met Monday, Nov.

County firefighter recruits now certified

The first class of recruits in a new on-the-job training program at Gilmer Fire and Rescue (GFR) have successfully passed the halfway point in training to become certified firefighter/EMTs.
