Prescribed burn smoke traveled south

When one smells smoke there’s fire, or so the old saying goes. That was true last week, but the fire was not in Gilmer County, nor was it one that had gotten out of control.

Need for security cameras talked at council meeting

Security cameras could soon be coming to Harrison Park and possibly the downtown Ellijay square in the future, all depending on whether applied-for grant funding is received.

Emergencies every day

Participants in the Gilmer Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy (CLEA) got a crash course in what it takes to be a 911 dispatcher during last week’s session of the educational program in which citizens get an up-close look at different GCSO departments.

New wildflower meadow taking shape at Harrison Park

A long-in-the-making wildflower meadow is coming to fruition at Harrison Park. Work to prepare the near acre-and-a-half site for planting was started by the Friends of Harrison Park (FOHP) in fall 2021, noted Mike Carter, FOHP member.

County parts ways with recreation director

Following a 20 minute closed session, Gilmer County commissioners voted unanimously to approve a separation agreement with the parks and recreation director. The decision to fire Parks and Recreation Director Kevan White came at a regular meeting April 13.

Earth Day-related events scheduled in Ellijay

Earth Day weekend and the weekend after will see multiple events in Ellijay connected to the environmentally conscious day. An Earth Day Fair  presented by Coosawattee River Resort will debut at River Park Saturday, April 22, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

A woman who grew up in Cherry Log is proud, grateful and excited to have recently been named the new minister of Cherry Log Christian Church (CLCC). Monica Ledford will be the first female pastor of the local Disciples of Christ church, which reviewed many candidates for the ministership.
