The economic impact of tourism in the Ellijays and Gilmer County in 2017 was $49 million, according to a Georgia Tech study commissioned in 2019 by the Gilmer Chamber. Lodging, including cabin rentals, accounted for more than $11.5 million of that amount, or well more than one-fifth.

Hunter Grindley practiced social distancing turkey hunting. His first ever turkey weighed 26 pounds had three beards and sported 1.6 inch spurs. Two days after brother Hunter killed a record book turkey, McKenzie Grindley decided she wanted to do the same. She shot a shotgun for the first time that evening and the next morning she lowered the boom on this trophy turkey.

Members of the National Guard visited Parkside Ellijay Skilled Nursing Care facility Tuesday, April 7, to assist and train staff in cleaning and disinfecting techniques recommended by the CDC. The National Guard has provided these services to numerous nursing care centers across the state.

‘Doing the right things for the right reasons’

Since the state Department of Public Health announced last week that someone in Gilmer County had contracted the COVID-19 flu virus, local social media speculated who the person might be — from a worker in the communications industry to a physician traveling back and forth from Atlanta.
