Fuel charge added to solid waste contract

Waste Pro took over hauling Gilmer County’s solid waste at the beginning of 2022, but at a special called meeting, commissioners were putting the finishing touches on the contract. Gilmer County Chair Charlie Paris said everything has been running smoothly with the company.

Big cat sighting stirs controversy

When Ellen Parks heard a neighbor’s cat crying outside her home in Creekside Estates, she ventured outside to see what was wrong. “It was way up in the top of a tree, and at that point I didn’t see the big cat,” she said of an alleged panther on a lower limb of the tree.

A new book by a Times-Courier family member shines light on young Georgia soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. In Some Gave All, Mark Millican profiles 23 young men from Gilmer, Whitfield and Murray counties, some of whom arrived in Vietnam as young as age 18.

Shoe drive till Aug. 28 at Ellijay Hope Lutheran

Ellijay Hope Lutheran Church is again collecting shoes, many of which will travel around the world to children in need. The church, located at 3295 Old Highway 5 South, began its annual shoe drive July 31.

Ground broken for new health care facility

Construction will soon begun on a new multipurpose health care clinic in East Ellijay, which is expected to open next spring. Ground was officially broken on the new Georgia Mountains Health facility Monday, Aug. 8. The almost 12,000-square foot clinic is being funded by a $4.

Changes made to GHS traffic routes

Safety and efficiency led to alterations to Gilmer High’s traffic patterns for the new school year. GHS unveiled its revamped traffic diagrams last week, and the main changes are where buses and parents drop-off and pickup students.
