Body

Mr. Thomas “Tommy” Bricker Daughtry left this world Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, after a three-year battle with nonsmall cell lung cancer succumbing to pneumonia.

He was born in Dothan, Ala., Nov. 22, 1943, to Jeannette Palmer and Ralph L. Daughtry. He spent his early years in Midland City and Dothan, Ala., where his father owned a lumber company. The family spent enjoyable time at their beach cabin in Panama City, Fla., where he developed the skills of deep-sea fishing.

He attended Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Fla. Upon graduating from Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., in 1964, he continued his education at the University of Alabama where he earned a B.A. degree (1967) and a master’s degree (1968) in painting. While at the university, he earned many awards and recognitions for his art including a purchase award. His artwork was an extension of him. He continued painting and drawing all his life. His art work was an extension of him.

He met Linda Moon, the love of his life, in a design class at the University of Alabama. He married Linda in 1972 and began a creative life together. Their two sons were the highlight of his life, as well as their grandchildren.

In 1968, he began his career in Columbia, Miss., with Project Transfer which involved working with elementary students in art projects. Since this government program ended after three years, he found employment at Clayton State University in Morrow in 1972, as studio art professor. He said, “Everyone should have a job that they love as much as I love this one.”

He touched the lives of innumerable students over the 33 years he taught there. Some became lifelong friends. He was awarded the Alice Smith Award for faculty member of the year in 2002.

He achieved his dream retirement in 2003 when he moved full time to his mountain cabin outside of Ellijay. His love of nature was fulfilled here. His indulgences were satisfied here spending hours outside in the garden. He delighted in his bonsai and his koi ponds. The vegetable garden led to his interest in food preparation that amazed his family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed the past 16 years at his home on Big Creek. His love of movies and books was endless, and he could baffle you with his knowledge of both. His portraits of his grandchildren were innumerable and became an outlet for his creativity. He also captured many moments of their trips to Europe.

He is preceded in death by parents and brother, David Daughtry.

He is survived by wife of 48 years, Linda Moon Daughtry; two adored sons, Bricker Scott Daughtry (Janette Cummings Daughtry) and Peyton Crawford Daughtry; cherished grandchildren, Brayden Daughtry, Bricen Daughtry, Brody Daughtry, Brynn Daughtry and Emma Zurita; brothers, Ralph Palmer Daughtry and Jean Daughtry

A celebration of his life will be held this summer.
