Thomas Nelson Mathis Sr.

Mr. Thomas Nelson Mathis Sr., 92, of Ellijay, died Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Manor Lake Assisted Living.

He was born in Atlanta Jan. 17, 1930, to the late Roland Bryan Mathis and Kate Hamby Mathis.

He was retired from the Cobb County Board of Education where he served as the associate superintendent for Cobb County Schools. He played a vital role in education in Cobb County which led to a PTA Council being named after him in his honor.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

He is survived by wife, Mary H. Mathis; sons, Tom Mathis (Casey), Hank Mathis (Patricia), and Russ Mathis (Cathy); grandchildren who he was very proud of, Katherine Vantosh, Bryan Mathis and Megan Morris; and great-grandchildren, Thomas and Millie Mathis.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Kelly officiating.

A private interment service was held.

Pallbearers were Hank Mathis, Russ Mathis, Bryan Mathis, David Horne, Marcus Mouchet and Steve Harrington.
