Mrs. Martha Ann Segars Chastain, 92, of Ellijay, peacefully entered into eternal life with her Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021,
She was born Jan. 21, 1929, in Sylvester to the late Thera Segars and Florence Hutcherson Segars. She was raised along with six brothers near Jefferson. She graduated from an 11th grade high school in Jefferson at the age of 17 and went on to receive a B.A. in 1949 from Berry College in Rome.
Upon graduation, she began teaching home economics in Cobb County where she met and married John K. Chastain Sr. in March 1950. Soon after getting married, she started a rewarding and challenging career as a home economist with Georgia Power, traveling around the state teaching, demonstrating the latest appliances and promoting the company. She joined the company as one of only a few females in the workplace and remained there until her retirement in 1985.
She and John called Cobb County home for over 40 years before relocating to Ellijay to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the mountains.
After John’s passing in 2006, she remained in the home they shared on the mountain and enjoyed many years of family and friends gathering there.
She is preceded in death by loving husband of 56 years, John K. Chastain Sr.; parents and siblings; granddaughters, April Jane Graham and Dr. Kristin Michael.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, John K. Chastain Jr. and Sandra, of Ellijay; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila Chastain Michael and Tom, of Canton; grandchildren, Ashley (Kevin) Bradford, of Marietta, Heather (Jason) Jackson, of Rocky Face, Seth Graham, of Canton, Jonathan (Caitlin) Chastain, of Indian Land, S.C., Dan (Amber) Michael, of Marietta, Tony (Ashley) Michael, of Cookeville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Hannah Jackson, Haley Jackson, Holly Jackson, Kalyn Graham, Kinsley Graham, Kelsey Graham, Lily Chastain, Daphne Chastain, Daisy Chastain, Tucker Michael, Evangelynne Michael, Harper Michael, Noah Michael, Wren Michael, Jonah Michael, Eleanor Michael, Jane Michael; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was blessed with a beautiful voice and spent many years as a church choir member and soloist. She also was blessed with a servant’s heart which led her to serve not only in the church but in the community.
She had many interests and was an avid reader and book enthusiast. As her health declined, she often said: “When I die, I sure hope they have books in heaven.”
She lived a long life of faith, love and kindness and those who knew her will remember how she lived her life trusting God through a life of prayer and faith. She loved her Savior, the Lord Jesus, with all her heart, and she loved God’s Word. She daily searched the Scripture, reading the Bible all the way through several times. She was a Proverbs 31 woman: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”
She was a powerful prayer warrior, and only heaven knows what a wonderful and eternal impact all her many years of faithful praying have had on her family, her friends and the world at large.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2021, at Flint Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Chad Kelly officiating.
