Mrs. Joyce Grant Young

Mrs. Joyce Grant Young died Wednesday, March 30, 2022. She was born Dec. 7, 1937.

She was a third grade teacher for many years and retired from the Gilmer County School System.

She touched the lives of many children. Even after retirement, she continued teaching and tutoring many students, and teaching an adult Sunday school class for many years. She was a member of Calvary Way Baptist Church.

She loved traveling with husband Eugene and together they visited 48 states and Canada, driving to each. She was a talented seamstress and for many years, used her talent to make costumes for the GHS Theater, while Eugene built sets. The costume closet was dedicated to her and Eugene and is known as the Forever Young Costume Closet. She loved her family and was greatly loved by not only her family but many others.

She is preceded in death by husband of 52 years, Eugene Cecil Young; parents Maude and Arthur Grant; brothers, Don Grant, Carl Grant (Tuck), and Lowell Grant; sisters, Opal Kee, Maxine Davis, Betty Davis and Joan Tucker; son-in-law, Alan May; and brother-in-law, Charles Young.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Gena and Jack Davis, Tracey and Mike Hurd and Denise and Tom Cox; grandchildren, Brandon (Morgan), Joshua (Tiffany), and Christopher (Victoria) Helton; Noah May and Laura (McClellan) Grice; Candice (Joshua) Chancey, Jacob (Elizabeth) Pierce, and Ty Cox; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, and nephews; godson, Levi Higdon; and goddaughter, Ashley Turner.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Calvary Way Baptist Church with the Rev. Claude Mathis and the Rev. Scottie Mathis officiating.

Pallbearers were Brandon Helton, Joshua Helton, Christopher Helton, Jacob Pierce, Ty Cox, Noah May, Joshua Chancey, McClellan Grice and Levi Higdon.
