Mrs. Betty Underwood Wyatt

Betty Wyatt of Brevard, N.C. was 88 years old when she went home to be with the Lord Jesus Oct. 8, 2021. She was a Georgia girl. She was born in Lindale to the late Clyde L. Underwood and Leslie Weaver Underwood. She grew up in the mountains of north Georgia, in Cherry Log.

After her family moved to Atlanta, she attended and then graduated from R.L. Osborne High School in Marietta.

She is preceded in death by beloved husband,  Kenneth Bell Wyatt; great-granddaughter, Gwendolyn Grace Dinkins; and niece, Michelle Martin.

She is survived by sister, Jeri Fogelsong; and  daughters, Denise Sawyer (Paul), Sandy Long (Chuck), all of Brevard, and Ramona Reagin, of Cherry Log; four grandchildren, Stephanie Dinkins (Matt), Carlton DeHart (Jeremy), Charlie Long (Bethany), and Hugh Lon; great-granddaughter, Everly Noelle Long; and nieces and nephews, Darlene, Sherri, Lee, Jack and Andy.

She met her husband Ken in Atlanta, and they were married and raised three girls. Even though they lived in Atlanta, the mountains always had their call on her, and they actually built a house and moved to Cherry Log when the girls were grown.

Twenty years later, in 2003, Betty and Ken moved to the mountains of Brevard, and restored Ken’s old family home where he was born and grew up. They enjoyed many years in retirement there.

Whether it was finishing a 4-H project or sewing a new outfit, cooking or gardening, her daughters remember her as the best mom and a gentle taskmaster who taught them everything, and she topped it off with that contagious laugh and smile that we will always remember her for. Many people called her mom because she just took them under her wing. She also loved her grandchildren who called her “G’ma.”

The family would like to express their deepest thanks to all her friends at College Walk Retirement and the staff who loved on her over these last few years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021, at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church of Brevard with the Rev. H. Andrew Silman officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service. She will be buried in the Gillespie Evergreen Cemetery in Brevard, at 1 p.m. prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the Missions Fund at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 645 Bert Lane Rd., the Samaritan’s Purse International or to the D.A.R., the Waightstill Avery Chapter of Brevard, P.O. Box 1284, Pisgah Forest, NC.
