Mrs. Barbara Jean Monahan Nickle

Mrs. Barbara Jean Monahan Nickle, 80, of Ellijay, died Saturday, April 3, 2021. She was born June 15, 1940, to Joseph Holden and Elsie Ellen King Monahan in Chester, Pa.

She graduated as valedictorian from Eddystone High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Don, and they lived in South Carolina, Maryland and Virginia before retiring to Walnut Mountain in Ellijay.

For 19 years, she focused on her family, leading every Boy and Girl Scout Troop, sewing costumes, supporting every extracurricular activity, setting up campsites, perfecting the art of bargain shopping, and pouring her creative energy into various arts and crafts. No matter how busy her day, she always had a home-cooked meal on the table for the family and our friends.  Ready to slow down, she returned to the workforce and retired from Mobil Oil Corporation as the executive secretary to the VP of supply and logistics. Even retirement couldn’t slow her down, and she stayed active in Ellijay with the Walnut Mountain Garden Club, volunteering at the Faith, Hope and Charity Recycle Thrift Store, publishing the Walnut Mountain newsletter with Don, and continuing to love and spoil her family.

She is survived by husband of 60 years, Donald; sisters, Jo Ann (Terence) O’Connor, of Mill Hall, Pa., and Patricia McTheny, of Milford, Del.; daughters, Karen (William) Brown and Jennifer (Phillip) Banzhof, both of Cumming; and son, Steven (Lisa) Nickle, of Bel Air, Md.

Perhaps her favorite title was Mom-Mom to her six grandchildren, Jake (Shannon) Brown, Michael (Tamara) Duncan, Victoria (McLean) Boyd, Carrie Elizabeth Duncan (Rob Walden), Delaney Banzhof, Mackenzie Nickle; and her four great-grandchildren, Haven, Bo, Tyler, and Austin. She will also be missed by Muffin, her beloved cat of 19 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Donations can be made online at michaeljfox.org or by mail to P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
