Water authority plans upcoming sewer repairs

The Ellijay-Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority will begin work on two sewer repair projects — a short timeframe emergency repair and another more long-term project — later this year.

FHC Recycle Store reduces operating hours

This week, Faith Hope and Charity Recycle Store will trim back its operating hours until further notice.  Beginning Wednesday, July 22, the store will be open for shopping from 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday-Saturday. “We were open 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Accident blocks Hwy. 515

A multi-vehicle accident on Highway 515 on Friday, July 10, at 10:30 a.m. snarled traffic on Highway 515 for several hours as rescue crews worked to free passengers and remove the vehicles. At least one person was life-flighted from the scene. Additional details were unavailable at press time.

Gilmer sees sudden spike of COVID-19 cases

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Gilmer County increased by a larger number during the weeks of July 2 and 9 than in the preceding two weeks, according to reports from the North Georgia Health District and the Gilmer Health Department.

Ga. Dept. of Education revises ‘path to recovery’ for schools

The Georgia Department of Education has amended its “Path to Recovery for K-12 Schools.”  The revisions were announced Monday, and the most notable change was the removal of the three levels of guidance based on the number of confirmed COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases in a community.

Gilmer High prom, graduation canceled

Gilmer High School’s end of the year festivities have officially been canceled. The GHS prom was slated for last Friday, July 10 with graduation set for this Friday, but those plans took a turn after a rise in confirmed COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases in Gilmer County.

Gilmer courthouse reopens to public

Gilmer County’s courthouse and offices reopened to the public on Monday following a cleaning. The facility was officially closed to the public on Wednesday, July 8, because of a local spike in COVID-19 (coronavirus) diagnosis.

Early voting starts Monday

Social distancing and other coronavirus restrictions will be in place when early voting in the Aug. 11 primary runoff election begins Monday, July 20, and runs through Friday, Aug. 7, according to Gilmer County Chief Registrar Tammy Watkins.

The Gilmer County Fair, one of the longest-running annual events in the county and a chief fundraiser for the Ellijay Lions Club, will not take place this year. The fair would have started Wednesday, Aug. 12, and run through Sunday, Aug 16.
