“It’s been trending down ever since Covid,” Chief Sam West said.
Being understaffed by 12 isn’t a safety issue and won’t affect GCFR response times, he said.

Gilmer Sheriff’s Office deputy diagnosed with concussion after being hit by car

A Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) School Resource Office deputy will be back to work in the next few weeks after he was was struck by a car.
A report on the incident from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) identified the officer as Deputy William Gooch.

Tannerite explosion shook local homes near house party

A Gilmer County Fire Rescue firefighter battalion chief and six others allegedly ended their week with a bang by shooting off 5 pounds of Tannerite, an explosive designed to detonate when hit by a rifle bullet. It’s used as a hit indicator for long-range shooting.

“[People] just need to know that all their deeds and plots and all the paperwork, all their filings, the old historical stuff is safe,” Clerk of Superior Court Amy Johnson said.

Sheriff’s deputy struck by car

A Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) School Resource Office deputy was struck by a car Tuesday, Nov. 18, while directing traffic.
A report from the GSP names the deputy as Deputy William Gooch. The report adds that he was hit by 80-year-old Carole Semenchuk.

River Street and the south side of the Ellijay square, and all of downtown, are dazzling with or without a Christmas festival and are drawing hundreds of tourists every day.
