Gilmer’s COVID case rate spikes as Delta Variant spreads

Just a few months ago, Gilmer County’s number of new COVID-19 cases was on the decline. Now, a sharp spike in new cases is being seen here and in several other nearby counties.

County cautious with recovery money

Gilmer County has received a portion of the funds it is eligible for from the American Rescue Plan passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden in March. And now, the county is taking a wait-and-see attitude toward spending the money.

The fair was scheduled to kick off Tuesday, Aug. 10, and run until Sunday, Aug. 15, as the event returns to the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds after being canceled last year. Event times are 5-10 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 5-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 4-10 p.m. on Sunday.

Fair back in town — enjoy the rides, but don’t miss the exhibits

Exciting, brightly-lit rides may be the biggest draw for most younger Gilmer County Fairgoers, but the fair also has a strong history of showing competitive exhibits entered by local residents.

Back-to-school celebration held

A back-to-school celebration was held Monday, Aug. 2, at Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium for teachers and staff. The Gilmer Chamber awarded door prizes donated by local businesses. Above, assistant superintendent Kim Cagle, students and the Bobcat mascot entertain the crowd with a dance performance.
Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines are all currently available  at the Gilmer County Health Department. The vaccinations are given on a walk-in basis, and appointments are no longer needed.

‘A long way to go’

With the COVID-19 vaccination effort past the half-year mark, data from the North Georgia Health District (NGHD) tells that Gilmer County is well short of meeting a 50 percent vaccination threshold.

Folkfest needs helpful hands

A local folk art festival will return to downtown Ellijay this September, but there’s a need right now for volunteers who’d like to assist in its preparation. The fourth annual Dancing Goats Folkfest is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25-26, at the Artful Acres site just off River Street.
