The Gilmer County Board of Education approved the rollback millage rate of 12.624 at Monday’s called meeting.
The rate is expected to be finalized Thursday by the county.
Additionally, there were two personnel matters on the meeting’s agenda. Board chairman Ronald Watkins made the request to vote on each matter separately, which was seconded and unanimously approved.
The board first unanimously accepted the retirement of librarian Jeris Pflueger.
Following a brief discussion, they also unanimously accepted the resignation of John May, a culinary arts teacher at Gilmer High School.
Ahead of the vote, Watkins said, “My feeling is that if he hadn’t resigned, he would have been fired. I want it to show in the record and in the minutes that this wasn’t just a regular resignation. If he hadn’t resigned, we’d be in a termination hearing. I just want to make sure something is in the record on it.”
Following the meeting, superintendent Dr. Brian Ridley reserved comment when asked for further details surrounding May’s resignation.
