Speed cameras coming soon to school zones

Just because a deputy or officer is not visible when a vehicle speeds by a school zone doesn’t mean the vehicle’s owner won’t get a ticket. Gilmer County commissioners unanimously passed the first reading of an ordinance allowing the use of speed detection cameras in local school zones.

Apple Festival’s ‘triumphant return’

Members of the Gilmer Chamber and Ellijay Lions Club were pleased to see almost 27,000 converge on the Lions Club Fairgrounds for the 50th annual Georgia Apple Festival’s opening weekend Oct. 9-10.

Highway connector open, work still remains

A new connector that links Highway 382 and 515 was made fully open to traffic in time for the Georgia Apple Festival’s first weekend, although orange barrels and some barricades still line the roadway as the project nears competition.

Drive-thru flu shot clinic vaccinates 100-plus

Although persistent rain threatened to delay a drive-thru flu shot clinic held last Thursday at the ETC Pavilion, 108 took advantage of the easy opportunity to “arm” themselves against the flu.

Local Toys for Tots drive kicks off this month

Friends of Library look to boost membership, book donations

The Gilmer County Library could use a few new friends, confirmed the president of a local group of volunteers that raises funding for the library.

Two sheriff’s office K-9s ‘vested’ through nonprofit’s donation

The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) is thankful to receive two protective vests for its personnel, although the lifesaving equipment is not fitted for your standard police officer. Instead, these vests will be worn by two of the department’s K-9s.

Apple Classic Car Show returns to R.T. Ford Saturday

Members of a local charitable car club are getting in gear for the Apple Festival’s first Saturday, when they will again host their long-running annual car show. The Apple Country Auto Club will present the 2021 Apple Classic Car Show at Ronnie Thompson Ford, 130 Coosawattee Drive, Saturday, Oct.
