Construction underway on Clear Creek Elementary

The construction of Clear Creek Elementary School continues to move along as weather allows. Ground was broken at the site in mid March, which is roughly 5.5 miles out Yukon Road. Extensive grading coupled with some rock removal were two of the first tasks.

Tire amnesty program begins

A free tire disposal program that usually coincides with Earth Day kicked off earlier this week.  Gilmer County will host this year’s Tire Amnesty program Oct. 13-24 at the county landfill located at 456 Tower Road.

Drive-thru flu shots up from last year in North Georgia Health District

A larger number of residents in six north Georgia counties decided to act early and get their flu shots at recent drive-thru clinics presented by health departments in the North Georgia Health District.

‘Blue Door Reunion’ to benefit food pantry

Several local musicians who enjoyed performing at now-closed River Street restaurant and nightspot The Blue Door Cafe will reconvene for a special benefit concert Friday, Oct. 9, at Cartecay River Brewing Company.  Music will begin at 4 p.m. and last until the venue’s closing time of 9 p.m.

Apple, market season off to strong start

Restrictions and closings at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic caused some proprietors of Gilmer County’s apple houses and farm markets to wonder if this fall’s influx of customers would be as strong as in previous years.

Scarecrow Invasion coming to Harrison Park

As fall sets in and Halloween approaches, scarecrows will again invade downtown Ellijay.  This time, they will gather at Harrison Park.
A single engine plane – a Super Decathlon – approached the runway from the south, bounced on a hard landing and veered sharply. The plane flipped upside down on the runway, causing minor injuries to the pilot and passenger. They were treated by Gilmer County EMS and released on scene.

Crash closes Gilmer County runway

No major injuries were reported following a airplane crash at the Gilmer County airport. The call about the crash came in at 3 p.m. Oct. 5, said Keith Kucera, Gilmer County Public Safety director. The single-engine airplane carrying the pilot and a passenger crashed during landing.

Early voting begins next week

Like beach dwellers before a hurricane, Chief Registrar Tammy Watkins and her staff have been preparing for voting to begin Oct. 13. “I’m expecting a heavy turnout,” she said. Already the office has sent out 3,959 mail-in ballots and had 1,215 of them returned.
