Mr. Roy Vernon Sanford, 89, of Ellijay, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022.

He was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Ellijay, one of 11 siblings to Joseph Emory Sanford and Mary Quarles Sanford.

He served in the Navy and took a job in Boston, Mass., as an X-ray technician.

He went on to work for the AVCO corporation, heading up the design team behind NASA’s Apollo Mission heat shielding, before taking a job with United Nuclear Inc. as a personnel director.

On retiring and moving back to Ellijay, he earned multiple degrees and certifications (CEAP, CACII, NCACII, etc.) and specialized in addiction counseling.

He was married to Dorothea Stinson and was involved in local theater productions with her, some of which can be found on YouTube (including his portrayal of Col. Tom Parker in “Elvis In Remembrence”) until her passing in 2004.

He is preceded in death by Clell Sanford, Clyde Sanford, Willard Sanford, Weldon Sanford, Wilmer Sanford, Gordon Clifton “Kip” Sanford, Ozella Ralston, Ruby Bartlett and William Emory Sanford who died at birth in 1942.

He is survived by sister, Ella Vee Sanford-Parks.

He and Dorothea had two sons, David William Sanford and Jay Allen Sanford.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022, at the Logan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Arnold officiating.

Music was by Karli Loudermilk.

Interment was in the Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery.
