Several county, state positions up for election
Early voting in the upcoming general primary election will start Monday, April 29. The last day for early voting in the primary will be Friday, May 17. Votes can also be cast on two Saturdays, May 4 and 11.
In-person early voting can be done at the Gilmer County Voter Registrar’s Office, 1 Broad Street #107. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. for Monday-Friday voting and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for Saturday voting.
The last day to request an absentee ballot for the primary is May 10. Voters will head to their precinct polling places on Election Day Tuesday, May 21.
Several Gilmer County government and board positions are up for election. County candidates are as follows:
Post 1 Commissioner: Karleen Ferguson, Jim Parmer, Doug Rink.
Sheriff: Stacy Nicholson (I).
Coroner: Jerry Hensley (I).
Magistrate Judge: Kevin Johnson (I).
Probate Judge: Scott Chastain (I)
Superior Court Clerk: Amy Johnson (I), Carol Daves.
Tax Commissioner: Becky Marshall (I).
Board of Education: Post 1: Michael Parks (I), Post 2: Chad DeBoard, Post 3: Doug Pritchett (I), Post 4: Michele Penland (I), David Settel.
All county candidates, except for the nonpartisan school board races, are on the Republican ballot.
The state race for District 9 House Rep. appears on both the Republican and Democratic ballots, along with an array of yes or no questions for both parties.
Several nonpartisan races for state superior court and court of appeals positions appear on both ballots, as does Appalachian Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge, for which incumbent Judge Brenda Weaver is running unopposed.
