Gilmer County commissioners voted to rescind their previous vote to name the River Park in honor of the Ralston family.
Harold Hefner River Park is the official name of the park. Commissioners voted to fete the Ralston’s without realizing someone was already honored.
“The family decided they didn’t want us to pursue it,” said Chair Charlie Paris.
The unanimous vote to rescind was taken at a special called meeting Friday, June 18.
Originally the proposal at the monthly work session in May was made to name the walking trail in honor of the Ralston family, which includes Speaker David Ralston, for their service and contributions to the county.
It was brought up by Parks and Rec Director Kevan White that many people worked to develop the park including many who are honored on a marble sign at the park, including Harold Hefner.
After discussion, the decision was made to name the park the Ralston River Park.
Following the regular meeting the mistake was realized.
“We don’t want to do anything to upset anyone,” Paris said. “This was done to honor someone, not dishonor someone.”
