A major storm passed through Gilmer County Saturday night and left many in its wake without power.
“Beginning around 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 11, Amicalola EMC experienced power outages in nine of the 10 counties we serve,” said Stacey Fields, director of Public Relations, Amicalola EMC.
A total of 11,638 of Amicalola’s meters were affected, 6,477 in Gilmer County, she said.
High winds brought down trees, which were responsible for most of the outages. Nine power poles were replaced in Gilmer County.
Most of the power outages were restored by Sunday night, Fields said.
Georgia Power had 1,094 of its customers affected on Saturday night, according to Allison Gregoire, a spokesperson for the company.
Gilmer County Public Safety Director Keith Kucera said his department responded to roughly 40 calls for trees down and blocking roads. He said the majority were concentrated on the east side of the county.
“That was the majority of our calls,” he said.
No injuries resulting from the storm were reported.
