Memorial Day usually brings visitors to Gilmer County and marks an official beginning of the summer season.
Many were wondering what would happen following the shelter in place orders with COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and guidelines in place for social distancing for some businesses.
“It was not a traditional Memorial Day,” said Gilmer County Chamber President and CEO Paige Green. “But, it was not a bad Memorial Day.”
She said visitors have been returning slowly to the Chamber’s office off Highway 515 since it reopened.
“I do think it was better than most expected," she said. “People definitely wanted out.”
Occupancy was up to 80 percent over the weekend for rentals. It dropped to 50 percent during the week.
“We’re still seeing long weekends over full week stays,” Green said. “It’s definitely a toe in the water, not a dive in the deep end of the pool.”
Jennifer Futch of R&A Orchards said people came out and were thankful to find the doors open.
“We were packed Saturday,” she said. “It was a great weekend overall. Everybody is ready to get out.”
Guidelines for social distancing are being followed in the dining area, which halves the amount of people which can be seated. Futch said a doctor thanked her and told her he felt safe because of the cleanliness.
In Ellijay at the River Street Tavern business was good, said Brad Simmons.
“It was busy,” he said.
“We were full for what we can be with social distancing.”
He said some potential diners did not get in to the restaurant.
“The people were here,” he said. “With the guidelines, we had to turn some people away.”
Ellijay Mayor Al Hoyle said he saw lots of visitors as he drove around town.
“Downtown was busy,” he said. “It was packed both days.”
Diamond Lure Campground & RV Resort was at capacity over the weekend with the fountain on and changing colors between red, white and blue, said Shawn Hefner.
“The weather was great,” he said “So, we can’t complain about that. The fish were biting and everyone was happy.”
Visitors came from as far as Wisconsin and Florida, he said.
