Local Authors Forum sees great attendance

Gilmer writers receive community recognition

The Friends of the Gilmer County Library’s (FGCL) Local Authors Forum event last weekend how art thrives on community.

“It’s a pleasure and honor to be invited to the Local Author Forum,” local author Jo Loveday said.

The event, which took place Saturday, April 25, brought nine authors together to discuss their work, meet the community and enjoy great stories.

The event had at least 47 people in attendance.

“I came to hear and learn about the local authors. It’s important to support our local authors and the community,” said attendee Sheila Jewart.

For local authors, events like the forum are all the more important as the publishing world continues to change.

According to Publishers Weekly, two million more books are self-published than are published by traditional publishers.

Local author Melinda Cowan said that self-publishing is often the best way forward for authors.

The FGCL, a Gilmer Chamber of Commerce member organization, sponsored the event. It donates $1,000 monthly to supporting the library’s programs, as well as hosting events, providing snacks and more.

Anyone interested in helping the library can contact FGCL President Barbara Dunson at 706-273-0980.

“It was a joy to have all the people,” Communications Director Jane Barber said. “It was wonderful to hear what the local authors had to say.”
