Historical society museum to remain closed

The Gilmer Historical Society’s Tabor House Museum is among the many local facilities that will remain closed at least through the month of April and possibly longer, all depending on when restrictions on public gatherings are lifted.

The downtown Ellijay museum, which closes each winter, had planned to reopen to the public April 2.

“When that date was selected, we didn’t know how COVID-19 was going to expand across the nation at the rate it did,” said Wayne Hooper, historical society vice president.

The historical society was also scheduled to host an April 18 speaker program about a 1904 train wreck in Pickens County if event site the Gilmer County Library had reopened by that date.

With the library also remaining closed till further notice, any historical society speaker programs planned for April and May have also been canceled. Those events may be rescheduled for a later date, Hooper noted.
