COVID-19 continues to impact daily school operations.
As of Thursday morning, 895 students in Gilmer County Schools have been quarantined and 445 of them attend Gilmer High School.
The annual Gilmer/Pickens football rivalry that was set for Friday has been canceled after GHS saw its team impacted by positive cases and quarantines.
“Wednesday we had our second positive on the football team and anticipated more,” GHS athletic director Matt Johnson said. “By yesterday (Wednesday) evening, we started to get the information we anticipated.”
Additionally, today’s softball game between Gilmer and Cherokee Bluff has been postponed. With seven GHS players quarantined and two injured, Gilmer does not have enough players in the program to field a team.
Softball games next Monday and Tuesday are in doubt as well, according to Johnson.
The GHS varsity volleyball team has been in quarantine, and they are on track to return to the court for their upcoming match next Thursday, Aug. 26.
