Gilmer County’s Board of Commissioners voted to advertise a change to sell beer and wine at Whitepath Golf Club.
“It really came about because of all the requests from visitors coming in,” said Gilmer County Chairman Charlie Paris. “It’s getting a good reputation. It’s getting around.
“We’ve got an actual first-rate golf course. We can thank Mike Brumby for that.”
Paris said the beer and wine won’t be sold to go.
“It will be closely monitored,” he said. “I don’t think that is going to be a big problem.”
Paris said the decision to review and possibly change the ordinance is just about business.
“I’m a teetotaler, I don’t drink alcohol in any form,” he said.
Commissioners authorized advertising a change to the ordinance at a Nov. 11 meeting.
Board attorney David Clarke said there will be minor changes to the alcohol ordinance to exempt the golf course from certain requirements.
Commissioner Karleen Ferguson asked to see a draft of the changes at a special called budget meeting Nov. 30.
Authorizing the advertisement will allow the board to begin to change the ordinance at its December meeting.
