Ellijay stop on Braves’ championship trophy tour
Ellijay is among a handful of north Georgia cities that will soon welcome the traveling World Series Championship Trophy won last year by the Atlanta Braves.
The trophy has been on the road since February, and 151 dates are included in the tour of the Southeast. It will arrive at Gilmer High School (GHS) for public viewing Sunday, June 12, beginning at 2 p.m. The event will be free to attend and open to the public.
The Truist-sponsored World Champions Trophy Tour provides opportunities for fans to take photos with the trophy, according to a Braves press release.
Jennifer Grimmer, Gilmer Chamber president and CEO, said the trophy coming here was made possible through collaboration between the chamber and GHS.
“The trophy will be set up with an Instagrammable background so families can do their fun photos with it, and there will be some Braves representatives or actual Braves there,” she added.
Dr. Brian Ridley, Gilmer County Schools Superintendent, said the trophy will be on display in the high school gym. The gym is a big enough facility, and the GHS campus has enough parking for the event, he noted.
“We’re really excited to be a part of it. You don’t get an opportunity like this every day,” Ridley added. “We’re happy to be able to accommodate the event and give our community a chance to take part. It will be a great thing for our kids and our community to see that World Series trophy up close.”
Other Braves trophy tour stops nearest to Ellijay are in Canton on June 19 and Blue Ridge on July 2.
The trophy is also being displayed throughout metro Atlanta, as well as parts of South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama, on this leg of the tour.
