- Dozens of motorcyclists and other citizens waving American flags welcomed the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall to the Lions Club Fairgrounds just before noon Wednesday. The Wall was assembled and opened for viewing Thursday, June 20, and was in place through Monday, June 24, 24 hours a day. Security and grief counselors were on site at 1729 S. Main St. at all times. - Gilmer County residents Jerry and Ilene Petit view the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Memorial wall, which was at the Ellijay Lions Club fairgrounds from June 20-24. Jerry served in Germany during the Vietnam War as military police at a post where ammunition was made. The public could visit the traveling wall, an 80-percent size replica of the Washington D.C. memorial, 24 hours a day. It was brought here by the Ira Cochran American Legion Riders. - With the help of American Legion Post 82 Auxiliary members, Jerry and Sue Hughes Nunn, of Acworth, found the name of Army Sgt. Larry Davis on the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall. As Sue Hughes, she and a couple of other friends were with Davis the night before he shipped out to Vietnam. The Wall was in Ellijay for five days of viewing before being taken to its next stop on Tuesday. (Photo by Mark Millican)
