Gov. Brian Kemp has announced that Alison Sosebee, district attorney for the Appalachian Judicial Circuit, will fill the vacancy for a third superior court judge in the three-county court circuit.
Sosebee has been the Appalachian circuit’s DA since 2013. She has also served as the circuit’s juvenile court judge pro tem, city attorney for East Ellijay, city attorney and solicitor for McCaysville and solicitor, public defender and judge pro tem for the Ellijay Municipal Court.
Sosebee will join Chief Judge Brenda Weaver and Judge Mary Beth Priest on the superior court panel for Gilmer, Pickens and Fannin County. The vacancy came about after Superior Court Judge John Worcester passed away in August.
As of Friday, the Gilmer County Registrar’s Office had not heard any details about whether a special election will be required to name the circuit’s next DA.
Tammy Watkins, chief registrar, did say that the deadline for having an election in March 2024 (when the presidential primary will be held) has already passed.
A specific time frame for when Sosebee will transition from DA to judge has also not been
announced.
