Ellijay city council members are allocating funds to repave heavily-trafficked roads in desperate need of rejuvenation. They received five bids for the project and voted to approve the lowest.
Bids opened Wednesday, April 16, for the cost of paving Maddox Drive, Victory Circle, Kell Street, Dogwood Drive, Poplar Street, Pine Street and Maple Street. Colditz Trucking was the lowest bidder, coming in at a total of $221,385.
“[The roads] are all in pretty bad shape, the side streets [in the Dogwood subdivision] are all broken up,” Mayor Al Hoyle noted at the council meeting Monday, April 21.
The city received $48,694 in Local Maintenance Improvement Grant funds, according to Hoyle. That money will be applied to the resurfacing cost.
He said that once resurfacing of all streets is awarded to the lowest bidder, the city will pay $172,690 from SPLOST funds, and the rest will be paid for by the grant.
Hoyle discussed with council members applying for a Local Road Assistance Grant through the state. He noted if more funding is awarded, they could add more streets to this resurfacing project that are in bad shape, like Skyline Drive. He has until June to apply.
It is unclear what the timeline is for this road resurfacing project.
