Each year, the Gilmer County Board of Commissioners is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable property in the county. When the trends of prices on properties that have recently sold in the county indicate there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the Board of Tax Assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and adjust the assessment. This is called a reassessment.
When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.
Gilmer County Board of Commissioners has made the decision to increase the 2025 Maintenance and Operation (M&O) millage rate to 5.829 mills. Since this millage rate exceeds the calculated rollback millage rate, it is deemed a tax increase for 2025. Before the board can set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Gilmer County Courthouse, 1 Broad Street, Ellijay, Georgia. The dates, times and locations of the meetings are as follows:
﹣ Wednesday, Aug. 6, 11:30 a.m., Jury Assembly Room
﹣ Wednesday, Aug. 6, 6 p.m., Jury Assembly Room
﹣ Thursday, Aug. 14, 5:30 p.m., Jury Assembly Room
The meeting for the final adoption of the 2025 millage rate by the Board of Commissioners will be held Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 9 a.m. in the Jury Assembly Room.
